Write a manuscript that sells
The first step in becoming a self-published author is to write a manuscript that sells. Easier said than done, right? Chances are, you have a lot of ideas. Now is the time to get them down on paper.
Know your audience
Who are you writing your book for? Will your book be fiction, nonfiction, romance, a thriller, or something else? Consider who your target demographic is. How old are they? What gender are they typically? What else might they be interested in and how do their reading habits shape the kind of material they like to read?
Research trends to learn what people want
Freely available tools including Google Trends and Amazon can tell you precisely what people are looking for in your genre. For example, if you go to Amazon’s best sellers and choose a broad topic like “Mystery, Thriller, & Suspense” or “Science Fiction & Fantasy,” you can drill down into subgenres to see what, specifically, people are reading.
Look at the top 10-20 books in the subgenre you’re interested in to see what the top sellers all have in common, including things like:
- Cover style
- Keywords used
- Common themes
For example, if you want to write a mystery and you’ve discovered that many of the books in the “Cozy Mysteries” subgenre all have amateur gumshoes and take place in a small town by the coast, you’ll have some idea of the preferences of your ideal readers.
Read the customer reviews section, including negative reviews, to see what people are liking or disliking about the book. Also take a glance at “sustomers who bought this also bought,” to see what other related genres or themes you might want to include in your book.
You can also participate in related Facebook groups or forums to discuss trends or specifics with fellow writers or readers.
Edit your manuscript
Every aspiring author reads through their manuscript dozens upon dozens of times, making adjustments here and there. Although it’s possible to edit your manuscript entirely on your own, we highly recommend enlisting the help of both your readers and a professional alongside you to make the job easier!
Self-editing
When you’ve completed your manuscript, be sure to read through it several times, each time focusing on a different part (like grammar, flow, plot, or pacing). You can use an editing software program like Grammarly to help you spot common grammar or spelling mistakes.
Be sure to read your book aloud, too, as sometimes when you’re skimming it — especially after reading it over and over again — your eyes will tend to skip sections or gloss over mistakes! Reading aloud helps you find any awkward phrasing or run-on sentences.
Invite readers to participate in a beta read
One of the best ways to polish and refine your manuscript is to invite potential readers to participate in a beta read. Just like software programmers offer a beta of their platform or tool before they release it to a wider audience, you can find a variety of writing and reading community groups on places like Reddit or Facebook and invite them to read your manuscript.
You’ll want to give them a clear set of questions to get specific feedback on your characters, plot, writing style and flow. For example:
- Which part(s) of the book did you enjoy most, and why?
- Were there any sections that felt slow, confusing, or unnecessary?>/li>
- Did you connect with the main character(s)? If not, what could make them more relatable?
- Did the plot flow smoothly? Were there any parts that felt disjointed or hard to follow?
- Was there anything about the book that felt inconsistent or pulled you out of the story?
Work with a professional editor
Working with the right editor, whether you choose to work with a professional editing team or work one-on-one with a copy editor or proofreader, can make the difference between an amateur author and a top-notch professional.
At BookBaby, we offer a variety of editing services, including line editing, copy editing, and proofreading. It’s a fast, easy way to get access to an exclusive network of editors that have worked with authors across every genre, including many authors published on the New York Times Best Sellers list.
Design a book cover
They say you can’t judge a book by its cover, but people absolutely do. Book cover design is one of the areas of self-publishing that you don’t want to shortcut, since many people’s first (and last) impressions of your self-published book are made based entirely on the cover.
Research covers to see what’s trending
The best way to get started with book cover design is to look at what’s trending across your genres. The same steps that you followed to research best sellers also applies to cover designs. Even if the books seem wildly different across various themes, they will still have some underlying elements in common.
Work with a professional cover designer
A professional designer can not only create your book cover, but also prepare the graphics in a number of file formats for proper, beautiful, high-quality printing. Even if you’re only publishing your finished book as an eBook, having a cover that looks tangible can help you sell even more copies of your book.
Format your book
Formatting your book means more than just submitting a manuscript in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or your word processing program of choice. To ensure a greatreading quality in print and across a variety of devices, it’s necessary to properly format your book. Thankfully, you don’t need to be a technical wizard to make sure all your pages print or load with crisp, clear text and illustrations.
Print formatting
Beyond custom book cover design, the graphics professionals at BookBaby also offer interior print formatting for your books. Imagine rich photography books with images that pop with crispness and detail, or recipes that look good enough to eat right off the page! That’s what happens with proper print book formatting.
eBook formatting
Print books aren’t the only option for your readers to enjoy. eBooks also give them the ability to take their favorite books with them on the go. The problem is, there are many eBook reader devices out there, and each one of them handles text and images differently. That’s why BookBaby offers professional eBook formatting services.
We make it so that your book opens and loads clearly and flawlessly across all eReader devices including Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, Apple iPad, and more. You’ll receive the final version in EPUB format, which is the most common and universal eBook reader format available.
Other options
We also have other options available, including audiobook creation and book translation. Have your book heard any time, anywhere or translated into over 50 different languages. These options give you the ability to tap into the explosive growth of the audiobook market for people who enjoy listening to books on the go, and you’ll also have more opportunities for reaching a worldwide audience of readers.

Marketing with metadata
Metadata is how search engines, including Google and Amazon, “learn” what books are about. By assigning relevant keywords and choosing the right categories, you can give your book the exposure it deserves on today’s most popular platforms.
Doing your metadata right can be the difference between a book that sells like crazy and a book that barely gets noticed. That’s why it’s so important to handle this part of the self-publishing process carefully.
Taking advantage of Amazon’s tools
Amazon offers a number of tools to help aspiring authors get started on their platform. Keep in mind that you don’t need to be published by Amazon in order to use their platform. Given that Amazon is the undisputed leader when it comes to book sales online, not taking advantage of Amazon to sell your books would be a huge disservice to your audience!
Thankfully, Amazon makes it easy for you to list your books on their system. Although the platform itself doesn’t offer a keyword research tool, they do have a powerful search function that can give you plenty of insights before you list your book for sale.
Metadata on Amazon consists of:
- Title and subtitle
- Author name
- Book description
- Categories
- Keywords (up to 7)
Your focus in this case is optimizing your keywords as best as you can in order to attract the largest number of readers.
You’ll want to start out by using Amazon’s search bar to find keywords. Amazon will auto-suggest popular phrases based on its own user search trends. So if your book is about time travel, it will suggest “time travel romance” or “time travel mystery.” Don’t forget to try out different terms or synonyms, such as “sci-fi romance” instead of just “science fiction romance.”
You can also see the metadata of top-selling books in your genre or subgenre. Just scroll down to the “product details” section to see which categories the book appears in. You can also read their description to see what keywords they’ve chosen. The “customers also bought” section is also a great place to glean ideas.
To optimize your metadata using the right keywords, make sure you start by adding one or two of your primary keywords into the title or subtitle. Let’s say for example, that you wrote a time travel book, and one of the most searched-for phrases is “time travel adventure.” Your book is titled The Lost Artifact, but you can still incorporate that keyword into the title of the listing (and not the actual title of the book).
For example: The Lost Artifact: A Time Travel Adventure. This gives you both the title and the genre. Then, within the first 100-200 words of your description, make sure to mention other popular books with plenty of readers, such as “A stunning time-travel romance perfect for fans of Outlander and The Time Traveler’s Wife.”
Then, when it comes to your keyword slots (for KDP – Kindle Digital Publishing), make sure to use phrases rather than single words to attract readers who are searching for more specific genres. “Time,” “travel,” and “romance” can bring up very different results than if you just made a single keyword of “time travel romance.”
Take advantage of themes and tropes as well, such as “forbidden love” or “dystopian future.” You can also use formats such as “Kindle books” or “audiobook thriller” as your keywords to attract users who want books that match those specific searches.
Get your ISBN
Every book out there has an International Standard Book Number or ISBN. Whether you want to sell your book in print, online, or both, you’ll need this 13-digit number to do so. The good news is that by self-publishing your book through BookBaby, you can take advantage of highly discounted pricing when compared to the alternative options at Bowker.
Keep in mind that if you choose to publish your book in another language, you’ll need a second (or however many languages you want to translate it to) ISBN number. Amazon also has its own ISBN system called ASIN, which it uses to exclusively identify Kindle eBooks. Even if you’re selling your book through Amazon’s platform, you’ll still need an ISBN.
The good news is, if you make minor updates or changes to your book, you don’t have to go through the process of getting another ISBN again. As long as your book isn’t a reprint or a new edition, you’re good to go with the original number.
Choose your platform
Next, you’ll want to choose selling your platform — a home for your book. For example, the BookBaby Bookshop is a site where users can go to buy your book directly. BookBaby Bookshop is a fair trade, author-friendly platform that has paid the highest royalties in the industry since its launch in 2014.
Benefits include:
- The ability to earn 3x as much per sale than standard distribution
- Your book is always in stock
- Your money is deposited within a week of purchase
- You set your own price
- The ability to track sales and buyer metrics
- Detailed, insightful analytics
BookBaby Bookshop is designed by authors, for authors. Of course, when you publish with BookBaby, your book or eBook will also appear on other popular sites, including Amazon.com and Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble and their Nook device, and many other outlets and smaller book retailers. This gives you the largest possible exposure while keeping your book on a platform designed to maximize your profits.
Set your book’s price
Before you decide how much to charge for your book, it’s a good idea to see what the going rates are for other books in your genre. You can also search for book royalty calculators to see how much you can earn from your sales. Try out different price points to see how they affect your earnings.
Don’t forget that you can also experiment with your pricing during holidays and special events, such as a pre-launch discount or a Black Friday sale.
Publish and distribute
Next, it’s time to launch by publishing and distributing your book. Once you’ve had your manuscript professionally edited and your cover professionally designed, it’s time to upload your files to the print on demand service.
You can also preview your book as it will look in print or online to do one last check before you launch. Once the proof is approved, you simply click “publish” and your book will be ready to buy online.
After this point, it’s time to spread the word and market your book!
Marketing your book
Traditionally, to market your book, you’d have to go about learning how to set up your own website, create a bunch of social media posts, build a landing page, set up analytics, and a host of other efforts just to get it launched. By using BookBaby Bookshop, you can avoid having to do all of that.
