When it comes to publishing a children’s book, you want to be sure that the layout and formatting of your text is as precise as possible. But… what’s the trim size? What’s the bleed? What’s DPI and what’s a CMYK color profile? There’s a lot to keep in mind when it comes to formatting your text, but that doesn’t mean you’re on your own. Follow these tips for the best possible results when it comes to interior formatting of your children’s book.
Table of Contents:
• Choose the right trim size
• High-quality illustrations
• Consistent typography
• Include plenty of white space
• Make use of chapter breaks and section dividers
• Test your book with the target audience
• Why choose BookBaby to publish, print and promote your children’s book?
Choose the right trim size
The trim size is the size of your book’s layout. The most common sizes for children’s books include:
- Small square (7.5” x 7.5”)
- Landscape (9”x 7”)
- Large landscape (11” x 8.5” or 12” x 9”)
Not only do these dimensions accommodate larger fonts and more vivid illustrations, but they’re also easier for small hands to hold, which makes reading a joy for young audiences.
High-quality illustrations
Vivid, vibrant illustrations are a must for children’s books. Before your book is printed, be sure that your images are in CMYK color mode with a resolution of 300 DPI or better. If your images fill the entire page or reach the edge, make sure they have an extra 1/8” on all sizes to account for the trimming process that will happen during printing.
If you’re not sure how to convert your images to CMYK mode or 300 DPI, you may need to use a graphic design program like Adobe Photoshop. It’s better to start with a higher resolution image and then resize it to 300 DPI than start with, for example, an image that was made for the screen (at 72 DPI) and then try to resize it. When you do, the image will look blurry and pixelated.
At BookBaby, we’re experts in helping our self-published authors create and print children’s picture books and other types of children’s books that are brimming with high-quality illustrations.
Consistent typography
Consistency in terms of the font styles and sizes are crucial when publishing and printing a children’s book. You’ll want to choose legible fonts and use them consistently throughout your book. This lets your young readers focus on the content without getting distracted by the typeface. To learn more, we invite you to check out our blog where we discuss how to format a book in more detail.

Include plenty of white space
Using white space prevents your children’s book pages from looking cluttered. Using white space correctly also helps guide readers’ eyes and highlights different elements in your book, such as your illustrations, making reading more enjoyable for children.
Make use of chapter breaks and section dividers
Organize your book with different sections. Think about the title page, dedication, and table of contents, the body (main story), and the back details (author’s note and acknowledgement). These offer a familiar format for readers of all ages, plus it helps to build your brand as a published author.
Test your book with the target audience
Before you finalize your book, share it with children in your target age group. Look at their reactions to spot any areas you can improve. Keep in mind that they are your reading audience, so their feedback is important in order to refine how your book is presented both physically and in terms of the story itself.
