How to Boost Your Author Brand On Social Media

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

As an independent author, it can be challenging to build your audience and keep them engaged on social media. With the right strategy and approach (and some good lighting), you can post like a pro and connect with readers online and off.

Boosting your author brand starts with creating the right content that entices your audience. Feeling stuck coming up with author content for socials? That’s where we come in.

When it comes to marketing your book on social media, it can be easy to fall into a rut. Here are our top 3 tips on how to create social media content as an author.

Tip 1: Choose an engaging topic to post about

What makes your book special? What inspired you to write it?

You can find inspiration from other authors, share information about upcoming events, capture photos or videos of you working on your next draft, or post reader reviews. Mix things up with a shot of your desk and a caption about your writing process, photos of readers at your next book signing, or a headshot with a review from a reader in the caption.

Tip 2: Take a high-quality photo or video of your subject

Capturing great photos and videos of you, your book, and your author events is an easy way to connect with readers and get the word out about your new release. You can take photos as events happen — unboxing your books, hosting a table at a book festival, reading your book at a book signing — or spend one day a month taking pictures and videos to use later.

Make sure to eliminate clutter in your shot, use natural light if possible, and focus your camera on the subject. Center yourself or your book in the shot and limit any loud or distracting background items. It should be obvious at first glance what the focus of your photo is. Leave some empty space around you (or your book) in case you have to crop your photo in the future! Soft, natural light makes every shot look more professional. Face a window, stand in the shade, or take advantage of early and overcast days for bright, consistent lighting.

If you’re taking an overhead or straight-on photo of your book, avoid glares on the cover. Stabilizing your camera applies to capturing photo and video; a blurry lens can ruin the shot! Wipe off your camera lens, hold the phone steady, and tap the screen to focus on the subject. If possible, use a tripod or prop your phone against something to eliminate any shakiness or blurry shots.

Tip 3: Balance authenticity with polish

As an independent author, being authentic is your greatest strength. You can tap into this by letting your followers (and potential readers!) get to know you as an actual person. Being friendly and relatable makes a digital interaction feel more meaningful.

Professional photos and trending videos are great additions to your social media, but followers want to get to know the real you! Bring your followers into your daily rhythms, adventures, and struggles as an author. Connect with readers by being consistent, being yourself, and sharing your beautiful story with the world.
