Looking to breathe new life into your old literary work? In other words, looking to scan your book? BookBaby can unbind and remove your book’s pages, perform a precision scan of your old books, and create new printed and eBooks for you.

With millions of new authors coming into the marketplace each year, self publishing has been the best thing to happen to the book world since the invention of the Gutenberg printing press in 1440! But what about previously published authors with books created before the digital age? How can they get back into the marketplace if they only have soft cover or hard cover copies of their books?

BookBaby has the answer. Our Book Scanning service will take your old books and scan them – page by page – to create a high-resolution PDF file. At $79, it’s an affordable way for authors to have a digital file of their previously published works, ready to return to the marketplace. Note: if you intend to republish your book, you’ll need to make sure you have reclaimed the rights to print from your original publisher.

Once scanned, we can create soft cover or hard cover printed books from the file. The PDF version of your scanned book cannot be edited or changed in any way.

There are other reasons why you might want to use our book scanning services:

  • Archiving. Creating a digital file of your work ensures it will last forever.
  • Portability. Those bulky textbooks or reference guides you’re using can be scanned and stored on many kinds of eReader devices.
  • Legal requirements. Some documents are required to be stored in permanent digital format and scanning is the best way to comply with these regulations.

There’s no minimum order size and BookBaby offers a fast three-day turnaround time. Call one of our product specialists at 877-961-6878 to set up an order and mail your book to us. We’ll get to work scanning and send you the PDF for your review.

Please note that this is a destructive scan: We have to remove all the pages from the spine in order to complete an accurate scan, so your book cannot be returned intact. (If you’d like your content back, we can ship the remains for $25.)

How To Work With A Self-Publishing Company
Is BookBaby Legit?

Steven Spatz is a writer, marketer, and the President of BookBaby, the nation’s leading self publishing services company. Spatz’s professional writing career began at age 13, paid by the word to bang out little league baseball game stories on an ancient manual typewriter for southern Oregon weekly newspapers. His journalism career continued after graduation from the University of Oregon at several daily newspapers in Oregon. When his family took over a direct marketing food business, Spatz redirected his writing and design skills into producing catalogs. The Pinnacle Orchards catalog was named "Best Food Catalog," received dozens of other national awards, and the business grew into one of the nation’s largest gourmet fruit gift businesses. After the company was sold, Spatz continued his direct marketing career with Fortune 500 companies including Mattel and Hasbro. He joined AVL Digital in 2004 to lead the direct-to-consumer marketing teams for music industry-leading brands Disc Makers, Oasis, and CD Baby. After serving as Chief Marketing Officer, Spatz was tapped to lead the company’s new publishing division in late 2014. In 2019, the AVL Digital Management team purchased the New Jersey brands, including BookBaby. The company is headquartered in Pennsauken, NJ (just outside Philadelphia, PA) and meets the printed book and eBook needs of thousands of self-publishing authors around the globe. Spatz lives in Glenside, PA with his two children, a demented cat, and some well-used bicycles. Steven loves to hear from authors, editors, and publishers in the BookBaby community with tales of publishing trials and triumphs. To tell him your story, write to steven@bookbaby.com.

  1. Hi, I have some earlier novels which I’d like to digitalise and republish, but I live in the UK. I have retrieved the rights from the publishers, Can I send them to you from over here?
