Of course, there’s no formula for writing a best-selling book. If it were that easy, everyone would do it. But, that doesn’t mean it’s not worthwhile to dissect best sellers and look for trends, patterns, and clues to better understand what these books have in common. That’s what this infographic, created by the good folks at Global English Editing, does. From the readability index to the POV of your narrator, many best sellers tend to have similar attributes.
Take a book’s title, for instance. Complex titles don’t often make the list, and starting with “The” is the most effective way to title a book destined for the best-seller lists.
And if you’re a journalist, your training in writing in a style designed to appeal to the masses can translate to big book sales, so sit down and write that book you’ve been thinking about.
Then again, there are exceptions to every rule. While romance novels make up 25% of best sellers, erotic stories rarely break into the mainstream best seller lists, which makes the success of Fifty Shades of Grey all the more remarkable.
