Bookstore-quality Print On Demand for idependent authors“Thank you for calling BookBaby, my name is _____ . How can I help you?”

So starts hundreds of calls to our Philadelphia and Portland call centers every week. Most of these chats turn into great conversations for both the author and our publishing team. But not every call has a happy outcome.

More than few calls, unfortunately, come to an early halt. This is how those abbreviated calls used to go.

Author: “Do you offer printed book distribution?”

BookBaby Customer Service: “Ah, well at this time we don’t offer printed book distribution…”

Author: ______ (sound of phone hanging up).

These kinds of exchanges happened dozens of times every day. A large-and-growing-hungrier number of authors want distribution for their printed books, just like they enjoy with their eBooks being distributed through BookBaby. And that’s something BookBaby didn’t offer.

Until now.

BookBaby has just launched its own version of printed book distribution for self published authors around the globe. It’s nothing less than a game-changer, a completely new approach to near universal print on demand book distribution especially designed for self published authors. You can learn all about it HERE.

Our program is certainly not the first POD book distribution program out there. In fact it’s taken the better part of 2 years to put everything in place for our authors. When we decided to offer print on demand book distribution, we decided on four must-have requirements for the BookBaby program:

  • It had to be easy for authors to buy. Authors give us one PDF file of their manuscript, go through one sign up process, and pay us one fee. That’s it. All that’s left is selling their books around the globe forever.
  • It had to be simple to understand. Self published authors don’t need to be burdened with complex processes for payments and returns. We’ve simplified it so that authors understand their potential earnings, eliminated charge backs for returns and take responsibility for collecting payment from 100s of stores through one BookBaby account. It can’t be simpler.
  • Every single book ordered through POD must be the highest quality available. This is a BookBaby exclusive. Unlike other POD providers, we use the very same high quality paper stocks and printing processes for one book or 1,000 book orders. digital printing presses for their POD books as we do for their larger print runs. From book number 5 to book number 555, to book number 995, the quality is going to be exactly the same. Guaranteed!
  • It had to feature mass distribution to bookstores all around the world. Global distribution has always been BookBaby’s strong suit. We’ve negotiated with scores of retailers, wholesale book catalogers and buying networks to provide homes for our authors’ books. I can say with utter confidence that nobody has a bigger distribution reach than BookBaby authors. Over 100+ outlets for eBooks and Printed Books.

These are the four cornerstones for the BookBaby Print On Demand Book Distribution program. We weren’t about to offer it before they were put in place. I think it was worth the wait.

So pick up the phone and give us a ring. There’s no reason to end those calls. The conversations can continue. And if an author hangs up now?

Well, that’s just plain rude!

Steven Spatz
Steven Spatz is a writer, marketer, and the President of BookBaby, the nation’s leading self publishing services company. Spatz’s professional writing career began at age 13, paid by the word to bang out little league baseball game stories on an ancient manual typewriter for southern Oregon weekly newspapers. His journalism career continued after graduation from the University of Oregon at several daily newspapers in Oregon. When his family took over a direct marketing food business, Spatz redirected his writing and design skills into producing catalogs. The Pinnacle Orchards catalog was named "Best Food Catalog," received dozens of other national awards, and the business grew into one of the nation’s largest gourmet fruit gift businesses. After the company was sold, Spatz continued his direct marketing career with Fortune 500 companies including Mattel and Hasbro. He joined AVL Digital in 2004 to lead the direct-to-consumer marketing teams for music industry-leading brands Disc Makers, Oasis, and CD Baby. After serving as Chief Marketing Officer, Spatz was tapped to lead the company’s new publishing division in late 2014. In 2019, the AVL Digital Management team purchased the New Jersey brands, including BookBaby. The company is headquartered in Pennsauken, NJ (just outside Philadelphia, PA) and meets the printed book and eBook needs of thousands of self-publishing authors around the globe. Spatz lives in Glenside, PA with his two children, a demented cat, and some well-used bicycles. Steven loves to hear from authors, editors, and publishers in the BookBaby community with tales of publishing trials and triumphs. To tell him your story, write to steven@bookbaby.com.
