Can I Work with BookBaby AND Kindle Direct Publishing Select?

… and can BookBaby handle my KDP eBook conversion?

The short answer: yes.

We can convert your book to the .mobi file format required by Kindle. But you will have to wait a bit before BookBaby distributes your book for iPad, Nook, Sony Reader, Kobo, and others.

KDP Select requires 90-day exclusivity

There are certain benefits to working exclusively with Kindle Direct Publishing Select: eligibility for the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, extra promotional tools, free promotion, etc.  The downside is, well… exclusivity!

According to Amazon’s website:

When you choose KDP Select for a book, you’re committing to make the digital format of that book available exclusively through KDP. During the period of exclusivity, you cannot distribute your book digitally anywhere else, including on your website, blogs, etc. However, you can continue to distribute your book in physical format, or in any format other than digital. See the KDP Select Terms and Conditions for more information.

So, for that first 90 days your book is available, it can only be offered (digitally) through Amazon. But if you’re planning to use BookBaby for worldwide distribution (for iPad, Kobo, Nook, Sony Reader, etc.)  AFTER that period of exclusivity is up, why not have us do your Kindle (or .mobi file) conversion, too?

How BookBaby Can Convert Your Book for Kindle Without Violating the Terms of Your KDP Select Agreement

1. Sign up for BookBaby and select the eBook publication package of your choice.

2. During the signup process, leave “distribution partners” blank. In other words, select NO partners. This will prevent us from distributing your book to iBooks, B&N, etc.

3. Email or call BookBaby to request your .mobi file. If you’ve selected our Premium package, request the .mobi file AFTER you’ve approved your proof.

4. Sign up to KDP Select using your BB converted .mobi file.

5. When 90 days are up, contact BookBaby and we’ll deliver your eBook to all the other digital retailers.

If you have any questions about this process, please feel free to contact our eBook conversion experts any time. Email books@bookbaby.com.

Sell your book for Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader, iPad, Kobo, and more!
