Brian’s talk at the London Book Fair 4/13/11: “Fame, Fortune, and the Independent Author”

Here’s the video of the talk I gave at the London Book Fair. I discuss how to market yourself as an independent author, including:

- How to build your own platform even if you are looking to find an agent

- Tips on creating an author’s website as a hub to sell your book online

- The economics of distributing your own ebook vs. traditional publishing

- How to balance a creative life with promoting your career

- The origin of the solar system and the pending heat death of the universe

My God, I can’t spell my own middle name properly, that’s worrying!

Love your description of “outliers” (makes me want to read Gladwell’s book!), and I REALLY appreciate your call to artists to – above all – focus on making great art.

Thanks Ben (and Yasmin Selena with an E!) While I love the fruits of outliers’ efforts, and while I’m intrigued in research on structured practice, I’m even more interested in ways in which non-outliers can be their best, despite faults in the dominant culture’s prevailing mythologies of excellence and achievement.

Even if you’re not an outlier, as long as you’re creating – as long as you endeavor to make something beautiful, and keep learning and listening and interacting and pointing toward where you’re excelling adding real value and service – you’re doing this living thing right.

      Cheers.

This is a really helpful and inspiring talk. Thanks Brian. Love the combination of practical (use Google Alerts) and inspirational (you only go around once, do it!)

Thanks so much Rob! Hope that you keep writing and that promotion can be both free and pain-free. Cheers! Brian
